RedGIFs Download Has No Sound? Three Causes
You download a clip, open it, and there is no audio. Before blaming the tool, it is worth knowing that only one of the three usual causes is something a download can change.
1. The post never had sound
A large share of uploads are silent to begin with — recorded without audio, or stripped by whoever posted them. RedGIFs records this per post, so a tool can know before it fetches anything. No downloader can add a track that was never uploaded, and any that claims to would be generating audio rather than retrieving it.
2. You took the silent version
RedGIFs often keeps a third file alongside the full-size and phone-size ones: the same picture with the audio removed. It is smaller, which is the point of it. If a quality menu offers something labelled silent or mute and you pick it, the file arrives exactly as described. Re-download and choose the full-size version instead.
3. The file has sound and the player does not
MP4 carries picture and sound as separate tracks — MDN's Media container formats guide lists the audio codecs a container may hold separately from the video ones — so a player can be showing one and ignoring the other. On a phone this is usually the hardware mute switch, which silences media without any on-screen sign. In a browser it is often the tab's own mute, set once and forgotten.
Telling them apart in ten seconds
Open the file in a desktop player that shows track information — VLC lists them under Tools, Codec Information. If there is no audio track at all, cause one or two applies and re-downloading the full-size version is the only thing worth trying. If a track is listed and you still hear nothing, the file is fine and the problem is playback.
It is a small thing to check, but it is the difference between re-downloading the same clip five times and knowing after the first that the sound was never there.
