RedGIFs Age Verification: Where It Applies and Why
RedGIFs behaves differently depending on where you are, and the difference is not a bug. Several governments now require adult platforms to verify that users are over 18, and RedGIFs has responded differently in different places.
United Kingdom: blocked, not verified
The Online Safety Act requires platforms hosting explicit content to check the ages of UK users — typically through government ID or a comparable verified method. The duty came into force on 25 July 2025.
RedGIFs chose not to build that. Rather than implement verification, it stopped serving its full catalogue to UK IP addresses. UK visitors are redirected to RGLite, a short-form version carrying only safe-for-work content.
This is worth being precise about, because it is widely reported incorrectly: RedGIFs is not verifying UK ages badly, and it is not down in the UK. It withdrew the adult service from the UK market rather than take on the verification obligation.
United States: eight states, partially blocked
A number of US states have passed age-verification statutes for adult sites. Since 26 May 2025, RedGIFs has shown an age-verification notice to users in:
Tennessee · Louisiana · Alabama · Kansas · Oklahoma · Indiana · Florida · Texas
In the interim, non-creator accounts in those states have been blocked while the platform evaluates compliant verification methods. Creators retain access, since they have already completed identity checks to upload.
Many more states have such statutes on the books than appear in that list — the eight above are the ones RedGIFs itself has noticed. The list changes as more states pass and enforce legislation. If your state is not listed and you are seeing a notice, the list has likely grown since this page was written.
Australia and elsewhere
Australian visitors have been reported through 2026 as being sent to RGLite, though behaviour has varied by network and device. Other jurisdictions are at earlier stages of the same process. The broad direction is consistent: platforms either verify, or withdraw from the market.
Why platforms withdraw instead of verifying
Verification is not a checkbox. It means handling government ID or biometric data for every visitor, storing or attesting to it, and carrying the breach liability that comes with it — for a service where users have a strong expectation of anonymity.
For a mid-sized platform, exiting a market can be cheaper and less risky than becoming a custodian of identity documents. That is the calculation behind the UK block.
On bypassing it
You will find a large number of articles explaining how to work around these checks. Nearly all of them are published by VPN companies, and the article is the advertisement.
We are not going to write that guide. Age verification exists to keep minors out of adult content, and publishing a route around it undermines a control that has a real purpose — whatever the traffic would be worth.
If you are an adult in an affected region, the honest position is that the platform has withdrawn the service from your market. That is a decision for RedGIFs and your legislature, not something a workaround resolves.
What this means for saved links
Clips you saved before a regional block do not vanish, but the source page may no longer resolve for you. If a link fails and you are in one of the regions above, the cause is regional policy rather than a deleted clip — the two are indistinguishable from the error message alone.
