What Is RedGIFs? The Adult GIF Host, Explained

RedGIFs is a media host for short, looping videos and animated images, focused on adult content. If you browse Reddit, you have almost certainly played one without ever visiting the site directly — most adult subreddits use RedGIFs as their default video host, so the player is embedded straight into the feed.

Where it came from

RedGIFs launched in December 2019, created by Gfycat as a separate home for adult uploads that Gfycat itself no longer wanted to carry.

The split became permanent in May 2020. Snap acquired Gfycat, and on 12 May 2020 Gfycat banned adult content outright, redirecting those uploads to RedGIFs. RedGIFs continued under VERGIL LLC — it had been spun out as a standalone asset before the parent company changed hands.

That history explains the platform's shape. It inherited Gfycat's engineering approach to short looping video, then became the default adult host almost overnight when the larger platform closed its doors.

Why the links say GIF but behave like video

Nothing on RedGIFs is actually a GIF file.

A real GIF is an image format from 1987. It has no audio, tops out at 256 colours per frame, and produces enormous files for anything longer than a couple of seconds. Every clip on RedGIFs is delivered as MP4 or WebM video — modern compression, full colour, and an audio track where the uploader included one.

The word “GIF” survived as a description of the format of the experience: short, looping, autoplaying, no controls in the way. The underlying file has been video for years.

This is why a saved clip sometimes has no sound. The player may be muted by default, or the uploader stripped the audio before uploading — the file itself supports it either way.

What RGLite is

RGLite is a stripped-down version of the site carrying only short-form content considered safe for work. It is not a separate product you sign up for. Visitors are redirected to it automatically in regions where RedGIFs does not serve its full catalogue — the United Kingdom being the clearest case.

If RedGIFs suddenly looks unfamiliar and the content has changed character, you are on RGLite, and the cause is regional rather than a fault with your device.
